January 11, 1975

On January 11, 1975, the Norfolk Journal and Guide reported on the tragic death of Zoe Barbee.  Barbee, the first woman and first African American elected to the Guilford (NC) County Commissioners, was killed in a car accident shortly after her elected.  Barbee was a graduate of Smith College and New York University and was a humanities professor at North Carolina A&T State University, where she also coached the debate team
