On July 2, 1991, the Philadelphia Tribune reported that President George Bush had nominated Clarence Thomas to fill the U.S. Supreme Court seat vacated by Thurgood Marshall.  "Civil rights advocates voiced reactions that ranged from lukewarm acceptance to disappointment," the Tribune said.
