Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

October 22, 1904

On October 22, 1904, the Baltimore Afro-American classified ads included an announcement for Howard University.  The ad told readers that Howard University "gives opportunity of Higher Education to all without regard to creed, race or sex," and that the school featured "Ten departments—Theological, Medical, Dental, Pharmaceutical, Legal, Collegiate, Teachers, Commercial, Preparatory, Industrial—conducted by one hundred competent Professors and Instructors."

In addition to this ad for Howard University, the classifieds page also included ads for a production of "David the Shepard Boy" at Bethel A.M.E. Church, Madam Winder "the Greatest Life Reader in the World," and Ozonized Ox Marrow to make curly hair straight.
